Student Semiotic Representation Skills in Solving Mathematics Problems

چکیده

Representational transformation skills significantly influence students' success in problem-solving. Students who struggle with representational are often less adept at utilizing mathematical ideas and relationships, vice versa. Therefore, this study used a qualitative, descriptive-interpretive approach to examine semiotic representation when solving problems. The research was conducted Year 9 classroom public school Bandung, Indonesia, 30 participants divided into high, middle, low-ability groups based on their level of ability. Data collected using both test interview techniques. results indicated that students the high middle ability had adequate algebraic treatment conversion from algebra geometry verbal expression for constructing expressions converting statements equations. In contrast, group demonstrated lack These findings highlight importance problem-solving activities can be valuable information teachers observers mathematics education.

Modelling Student Acquisition of Problem-Solving Skills

This paper describes the design of a system that simulates a human student learning to prove tneorems in logic by interacting with a curriculum designed to teach those skills. The paper argues that sequences in this curriculum use instructional strateu, and that the student recognizgs these strategies in driving the learning process.

Assessing Student Problem-Solving Skills With Complex-Based Tasks

Valid formative assessment is an essential element in improving both student learning and the professional development of educators. Various shortcomings in common assessment modalities, however, hinder our ability to make and evaluate such formative decisions. The diffusion of computer technology into American classrooms offers new opportunities to evaluate student learning and a rich, new sou...

Solving inductive reasoning problems in mathematics: not-so-trivial pursuit

This study investigated the cognitive processes involved in inductive reasoning. Sixteen undergraduates solved quadratic function–finding problems and provided concurrent verbal protocols. Three fundamental areas of inductive activity were identified: Data Gathering, Pattern Finding, and Hypothesis Generation. These activities are evident in three different strategies that they used to successf...

Student representational competence and self-assessment when solving physics problems

Student success in solving physics problems is related to the representational format of the problem. We study student representational competence in two large-lecture algebra-based introductory university physics courses with approximately 600 participants total. We examined student performance on homework problems given in four different representational formats mathematical, pictorial, graph...
